Canadian Dental Care Plan

We accept the Canadian Dental Care Plan

UCC Dental at Western University welcomes CDCP members. Here is who qualifies for the 2026–2027 benefit year, what the plan covers and how to get started.

Eligibility

Do you qualify?

You can get CDCP coverage if all four of these are true for you (and your spouse or common-law partner, if you have one):

No access to dental insurance

Including coverage through work, a pension, a family member’s plan, a health spending account or a student association.

Family income under $90,000

Your adjusted family net income on last year’s tax return is less than $90,000.

Taxes filed in Canada

You (and your spouse or partner) filed a Canadian tax return for last year.

Canadian resident

You are a resident of Canada for tax purposes.

Western students: check your student plan first

Under the CDCP rules, dental coverage you can get through a student association counts as access to insurance. Check your status on canada.ca before you apply, and ask us if you are not sure what your plan covers.

Your share

What you pay

Your co-payment depends on your adjusted family net income. It is a percentage of the CDCP fee for each covered service.

0%

Under $70,000

The CDCP pays 100% of its set fee.

40%

$70,000 – $79,999

The CDCP pays 60%; you pay 40%.

60%

$80,000 – $89,999

The CDCP pays 40%; you pay 60%.

If our fee for a service is higher than the CDCP rate, or you choose a service the plan does not cover, there may be an extra charge. We will always tell you about any cost before treatment begins.

Coverage

What the CDCP covers

Preventive care

Exams, x-rays, cleanings, fluoride and sealants.

Basic treatment

Fillings, root canals and gum (periodontal) care.

Major treatment

Crowns, dentures and oral surgery such as extractions.

Sedation

Nitrous oxide, oral sedation and deeper sedation when needed.

Some services, such as crowns, dentures, root canal re-treatment and deeper sedation, need approval from the CDCP before treatment; we handle that request for you. Orthodontic treatment (braces and aligners) is not currently available under the plan.

Getting started

How to use your CDCP coverage at UCC Dental

1

Apply with the Government of Canada

Apply online at canada.ca or by phone at 1-833-537-4342 (TTY 1-833-677-6262). There is no fee to apply.

2

Get your member card

Once you are approved, Sun Life (which runs the plan for the government) mails you a welcome package with your member card and your coverage start date. Please book your visit for on or after that date.

3

Book your visit with us

Request an appointment and bring your member card. We bill the CDCP directly, so you only pay your co-payment and any extra charges we have discussed with you.

Coverage runs for a set benefit period (currently July 1 to June 30) and has to be renewed every year, based on your latest tax return. Plan details can change, so please confirm on canada.ca/dental. Information last checked October 2026.
